It's a strangely moving experience to flip through Woodcut (Princeton Architectural Press, $30), a book of Bryan Nash Gill's relief prints of tree-trunk cross sections, which the artist harvests from felled trees, cedar telephone poles and discarded fence posts in his native Connecticut/5(59).

I'll add information relating to the film. The Apocalypse, properly Apocalypse with Pictures (Latin: Apocalipsis cum figuris) is a famous series of fifteen woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer of scenes from the Book of Revelation, published inwhich rapidly brought him fame across Europe.
The series was probably cut on pear wood blocks and drew on theological advice, particularly from Johannes Pirckheimer, the father of Dürer's friend. Most of his woodcuts were created from dead or damaged tree parts that he collected and took to his studio to prepare cross-sections of the wood for relief printing.
InChronicle Books published Woodcut, a book which displays a selection of Gill's prints; it was named one of The New York Times Magazine ' s best books of the year. This superb collection presents over finely reproduced woodcuts from the work of nearly 30 major artists in the movement who worked in the woodcut medium.

The wordless novel is a narrative genre that uses sequences of captionless pictures to tell a story. As artists have often made such books using woodcut and other relief printing techniques, the terms woodcut novel or novel in woodcuts are also used.
The genre flourished primarily in the s and s and was most popular in Germany. Block books, also called xylographica, are short books of up to 50 leaves, block printed in Europe in the second half of the 15th century as woodcuts with blocks carved to include both text and illustrations.
